By the way, I don’t really know how you feel, but I feel really specail… because I can say without fear that I did not happen by chance… I was fashioned by the loving hands of My Awesome God!

Jesus could only have been one of four things: a legend, a liar, a lunatic–or Lord and God. There is so much historical and archeological evidence to support his existence that every reputable historian agrees he was not just a legend. 

If Jesus were a liar, why would he die for his claim, when he could easily have avoided such a cruel death with a few choice words? And, if he were a lunatic, how did he engage in intelligent debates with his opponents or handle the stress of his betrayal and crucifixion while continuing to show a deep love for his antagonists? Christ said he was Lord and God. The evidence supports that claim.

Here are some of the key claims Jesus made about himself.

The Claims of Jesus

Christ claimed to live a sinless life

Jesus could look at a crowd of people angry at his claims to share God’s nature and ask, “Which of you can point to anything wrong in my life?” Even more amazing is that none of them could give a reply! No human being has ever lived a sinless life, except for Jesus Christ. Also read John 8:28-29 and John 8:46-47.

Jesus Christ claimed to be the ONLY way to God

Not one of several ways, but the one and only way. Not to teach the way, but to be the way to God. Nobody has ever made claims like that before and backed them, but Jesus did through his love, balanced life, and miracles.

John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me.”. Also read Matthew 11:27.

Note that no other religious leaders such as Buddha, Confucius and Mohammed ever made this claim.

Christ claimed to have shared the glory of God in Heaven

Jesus claimed to have pre-existed the people he spoke with. The apostle John–who shared bread with Jesus–wrote that Jesus was with God in the very beginning, and that “all things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.” (John 1:1-5)

John 17:5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”

This is a claim distorted by groups like the Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Jesus Christ claimed to be able to forgive sins

One of the reasons that the Jewish leaders were so angry with Jesus was his continual practice of forgiving people’s sins. The religious leaders understood clearly that since sins were rebellion against God Himself, only God could forgive sins.

Read Luke 5:20-21 and Luke 7:48-49 to some of such claims and the reaction of jews for such claims.

Christ claimed to be a Heavenly king

Luke 22:69 “But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

Luke 23:1-3 “Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, ‘We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king.’ So Pilate asked Jesus, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘Yes, it is as you say,’ Jesus replied.”

John 18:36-37 “Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.’ ‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’”

Christ claimed to be able to give everlasting life

Jesus didn’t just tell people how they could find everlasting life, or deepen their own life experience. He actually claimed to give life himself.

John 6:40 “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:47 “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.”

Jesus claimed that he would die and come back to life

John 10:17 “Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

John 16:16 “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

Luke 18:31-33 “Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, ‘We are going up into Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.’”

Christ claimed that he would return again to judge the world

Matthew 24:27-30 “So as the lightening comes from the east and flashes to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man… At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.”

Matthew 25:31-32 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep and the goats.”

Mark 14:61-62 “Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’ ‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’”

Jesus clearly claimed to be both God and Messiah.

Every year, in my office, we invite special guests to celebrate Christmas with us. These guest fall under the latter catogory. Yes, we have guest from an orphanage, and these children are really special, they are HIV infected. Every year we do our best to put on a smile in the faces of our special guests. Tiny kids, from ages 4 through 15 visit our workplace. The moment they enter our workplace, we are infected with their beautiful smiles. Cheerful with what little they have, a heart so innocent… they touch our heart everytime during Christmas. This year was special for me as I got to get even closer to these kids. Man, what love, what innocense, how beautiful they are… guess we have got great things to learn from them. We celebrated a true Christmas, sharing love and joy with these special kids. We wanted to reach out to them, but it was they who reached out to us, through their contagious smile.

Christmas is nothing without sharing. God shared His love for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to the world. Now it is our turn to share His love with others. May this Christmas be truely blessed and may the Hero of Christmas, Jesus Christ help us to share our blessings with others.

It emerged unscathed from the terrible violence and destruction that marked the end of Communist Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Slovenia lies in the shadows of the Alps, on Austria’s southern border. A nation of just 2 million, it is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe, offering a great quality of life, if your government recognizes that you exist.
 
When Slovenia became an independent nation in 1991, about 200,000 non-Slovenians who were legal residents during the Yugoslav period, Bosnians, Serbians, Croatians and others, had to reapply for residency in the new independent Republic of Slovenia.

The ‘Living Dead’

For many reasons, about 30,000 did not or could not reapply, and their legal status was erased from books. Some 5,000 of this group immediately left the country. The rest who stayed lived as illegal aliens.

They are known as The Erased. And after almost two decades, thousands still do not officially exist.
 
Some of the Erased have referred to themselves as ‘the living dead.’ They had no jobs, no pensions, no apartment, no medical care, no passport, and no nation.
 
Beširevic, a Bosnian by birth, was in a coma and recovering from a bad accident during the period when he was supposed to apply for Slovenian residency. His old identity card was destroyed by a Slovenian official. 

“She asked me if I had an ID card, and at that time my ID card was valid for the next 10 years,” he explained. “She took it, perforated it and told me that I was erased from the register of permanent residents in the Republic of Slovenia.”

A Great Deception
 
Nisveta Lovec, also a Bosnian by birth, didn’t think she had to worry about applying for residency. After all, she was married to a Slovenian and her children were Slovenian. She would be terribly wrong.

“Everything turned upside down,” Lovec said. “That’s when the worst suffering in my life started. Something that I never thought I would experience.” 
 
Not only did Lovec lose her legal status, but her fourth child did as well.

Matevz Krivic is a former Slovenian Constitutional Court justice who now works full time on what he calls the illegal erasure of tens of thousands of people.

“Most of them lost the chance for a normal life, to earn a living, to raise children, to search for a job,” Krivic said.

Cleansing without Guns

Krivic is a frustrated man working on an unpopular cause. The Erased have been cast as freeloaders or enemies from other Yugoslav republics like Serbia. And the public has shown little sympathy for their plight.
 
“It was a great deception of the population,” Krivic said. “The population was and still is misled by the politicians of Slovenia, intentionally presenting them as this mass of people, 20 to 25,000 people as the enemies of Slovenia.”

Among those without sympathy for the Erased is the president of the right-wing Slovenian National Party, Zmago Jelincicz.

“Actually there are no ‘Erased.’ There are people who tried to get an economic advantage for a better life,People trying to avoid this or that. and a lot of criminals among them. They are not victims. The victim is the state and law abiding citizens.”  said Jelincicz.
 
Krivic says opposition to the Erased is fueled by “xenophobia and nothing more.”  He calls it ethnic cleansing without guns, and believes some of the Erased died because they were denied homes and medical care.

Broken Lives 

Irfan Beširevic, no longer able to provide for his family, saw his personal life disintegrate. His wife divorced him over his failure to be able to provide. 

“I lost my family because I was embarrassed to look into my child’s eyes as I had nothing to offer to him,” he said.
 
Nisveta Lovec said. “You had all documents in order and now you don’t exist.”
 
It’s believed there are still some 4,000 erased persons living in Slovenia. It has become a political football by right and left.

Krivic, after years of battling the system, does not believe very many of the Erased will ever see justice.

The document written by Christian, Catholic and Orthodox leaders calls on believers to fight for traditional marriage, the unborn and religious liberty even if it means breaking the law.
